Alley Mainstage Presents:
In The Next Room or the vibrator play
By Sarah Ruhl
Directed by Buffie Main
A play that ponders marriage and intimacy and how electricity came along to fuse them together.
Described as a "Smart, delicate and very, very funny" by the New York Post, Alley Reps
upcoming production of In the Next Room or the vibrator play is a beguiling play about
love, longing, science and invention. Set at the dawn of the electrical age, a new medical device is developed to pacify 'hysterical' women, but it produces a shockingly different result. While Dr. Givings innocently wonders about the success of his extraordinary
device, his wife, Catherine, is only a bystander in her husband's world - listening at
the door from the next room and longing for a different kind of intimacy. This Tony
Award Winner and finalist for the Pulitzer prize is a funny, tender and occasionally heartbreaking play and a sensitive study of the relationship between physical connection and emotional intimacy.
